In 2003, the outbreak of SARS in the residential estate Amoy Gardens was proven to be spread by infected aerosol from soiled water pipes due to a depleted U-trap 1. Typically, U-trap or P-trap is used to connect each sanitary fitment to ensure sufficient level of water remains in the trap as a “water seal” to block foul air from the stack.
